About Rockie Beach Sports Club

About

Supporters of The Rockie Beach Sports Club (‘Rockies’) meet Monday to Friday at sunrise all year round for the purpose of group fitness, health and mental well-being.  The meeting point is our club pool commonly referred to as The Avalon Beach Ocean Rock Pool. Supporters train with one another at the club pool and on the surrounding beach & dunes and a group ocean swim is led off the rock from the back of the club pool each day.

The Daily Av O’Clock Rock Ocean Swim
Each morning, subject to safe surf conditions we lead a group of ocean swimmers off the rock from the back of the club pool.  The term Av O’Clock is a reference to the ad hoc & relaxed nature of the start time that has varied somewhat in the past and changes depending on the time of year.  The swim course remains ad hoc with a decision made on the day.
Open to Supporters, prospects & their family members.
September Set Swim Time: 7:00am

Café Wellbeing Catch-up
Supporters gather afterwards on level 1 of the club.  Known as ‘The Classic Club Rooftop’ and commonly referred to as The Classic Coffee Van on South Av Headland.  An opportunity for a social catch up and check-in with each other overlooking the ocean below.  Open to members and guests.

Other Specific Training Activities | Monthly Challenges & Social Events
A number of Supporters facilitate external training including specialist running, cycling, swimming and other general groups.   We also host specific social events.  These are posted either on the Website or on our Strava Club, Facebook or WhatsApp Groups.

Monthly Challenge: “Setember”
Set a goal or challenge each day over the month of September.

Supported Causes
Wet Dry July

In July a number of Supporters get involved in an initiative called Wet Dry July. This involves swimming every day (wet) and refraining from drinking (dry) in support of local mental health awareness.  This well-being initiative was created by a group of RBSC supporters.

Support RBSC

Prospective supporters (referred to as Rockies on P’s or simply ‘Prockies’) must be proposed & seconded by a current RBSC cap owning swimmer.  After paying for a ‘merch kit’ a prospective supporter must undertake the following swimming requirements:

  • Complete 7 swims a month for a consecutive 3-months or 20 swims a month over 1-month.
  • Swims can be either in the club pool or in the ocean.
  • Swims must be completed and vouched for by at least one other supporter.
  • Swims must be a minimum of at least 200m in distance.
  • Swim season is all year Monday to Friday with regular club hours between 5:30-8:30am.

Once swim requirements have been completed, the unwritten rule 20 1(VII) will be applied and the supporter will be presented with their RBSC Merchandise Pack & Swim Cap* and included for admittance onto The Rockie Beach Sports Club Supporters Roll.

Supporters Monthly Maintenance: ‘The 7-Day Wellbeing Rule’
As a supporter you agree to meet, swim in the club pool or ocean and catch up afterwards at least 7 days a month.  This must be with at least 1 fellow supporter and is done on a handshake system.  Supporters  have 24-hour access to the club pool so this can happen inside or outside regular club opening hours.
Failure to do so will see the suspension (and handing in of your cap) for a 1-month (or longer) period unless a valid reason is presented at a committee hearing.

*While any merchandise is the property of the individual member The RBSC Swim Cap is expected to be worn only by those supporters who meet their monthly maintenance.

The Club is ably steered by Reginald (Reggie) Scuttle who is Vice-Chair, Director of Activities and Master of Events.

Born on a ship’s deck in 1927, Reggie has never strayed too far from the sea. He has devoted his life to healthy pursuits and heroic acts and no less than 23 people owe their lives to one of Reggie’s legendary single handed rescues in high seas or high surf.

Now highly reclusive in his later years Reggie is rarely seen at club events but manages to keep the club in order from his desktop in the ‘bunker’ set up in the converted tug boat he calls home.

The use of the word ‘club’ is tongue in cheek – supporters of the ‘club’ are like minded individuals who communicate through various channels to organize to participate together as groups of individuals at their own risk and of their own accord.

Disclaimer: Rockie Beach Sports Club is an informal group who meet regularly at the Avalon Beach pool and swim there or off the rocks and across Avalon Beach. It is free to participate and all are welcome. Each swimmer has a personal responsibility to decide whether or not they swim on any particular day and in any given conditions. They should only swim if they are completely confident about the conditions of the surf, ocean and weather that they are choosing to swim in as ocean swimming can be a dangerous recreational activity – especially from the rocks and if the surf is large. All swimmers have a personal responsibility to determine that they have the physical condition and skills to enter into and complete a swim safely without any water safety assistance from other swimmers or the group as a whole. If a swimmer has any existing physical condition or any doubt as to their ability to complete a swim they should have a medical check-up first. Swimmers under the age of 18 should only swim if accompanied by a parent or a person who has parental responsibility for them. Swimmers should be aware that there is no water safety nor insurance in the event of sustaining injury etc…
If you choose to swim at any other time or on any other route, be it with Rockie Beach Sports Club swimmers, or with friends whom you have made through Rockie Beach Sports Club, the same applies.
